Getting to and Around Nevada at Christmas and New Year 2026

Winter travel across the Silver State means choosing your base carefully, watching the mountain passes and booking early for the holiday week.

Arriving: which airport and which road

Most holiday visitors land at Harry Reid International Airport, five minutes by shuttle from the Las Vegas Strip and roughly seven hours by car from Reno via US-95. Reno-Tahoe International sits closer to the northern resorts and is the better choice if your trip centres on Lake Tahoe or the Sierra. Christmas week and the days around 1 January 2027 are the busiest of the year on I-15 south of Las Vegas and on I-80 over Donner Pass, so build slack into any same-day connection.

If you are driving in, the two corridors that matter are I-15 from southern California through Primm and I-80 from Sacramento through Truckee. Both can close for snow and chain controls, most often from late December into February. Amtrak's California Zephyr runs from the Bay Area through Reno to Salt Lake City, and the Thruway buses link Reno to Tahoe, though holiday services fill quickly — check the official sites for schedules rather than relying on memory.

Where to base yourself in Las Vegas and Reno

In Las Vegas, the Strip and Paradise put you within walking distance of the big resort Christmas displays, while Downtown and the Arts District along Main Street suit travellers who want smaller hotels and quieter evenings. Henderson, fifteen to twenty minutes southeast via I-215, is cheaper and easier for parking, and North Las Vegas works if you are visiting family rather than sightseeing. Expect holiday-week rates to run well above January levels at Strip resorts; budget properties off-Strip and in Henderson are where the value sits.

Reno rewards a downtown base near the Truckee River and the Virginia Street bridge, with the Nevada Museum of Art and the Riverwalk within a short walk. Midtown, south of the river, has smaller independent hotels and better coffee. Sparks, ten minutes east on I-80, is a practical alternative during the holiday crush and puts you closer to the Sierra turnoffs. For a family Christmas, I would book downtown Reno over the Strip: fewer crowds, cheaper parking and quicker access to the mountains.

Snow country: Tahoe, Mammoth and the passes

From Reno, Lake Tahoe's north shore is about forty-five minutes on I-80 and Highway 431, with Incline Village and Tahoe City as the main bases. South Lake Tahoe, reached via US-50 from Carson City, is roughly an hour from Reno and offers the densest cluster of lodgings. Mammoth Lakes, across the state line in California, is four to five hours south of Reno on US-395 and better reached from Las Vegas in about the same time via US-95 and US-6. Carry chains and check road conditions before setting out.

The best months for reliable snow are January through March, so late December trips should plan around the possibility of a closed pass rather than assume one. If skiing is the priority, I would choose South Lake Tahoe for choice of accommodation and Mammoth for quieter slopes, and skip day-trip driving from Las Vegas to the Sierra entirely — it is too far for a comfortable return in winter light.

Getting around without a car

In Las Vegas, rideshares and taxis cover the Strip, the airport and Downtown well, and the Las Vegas Monorail runs behind the east side of the Strip between the Sahara and MGM Grand stations. Christmas Day sees reduced service on some resort shuttles, so confirm times with your hotel. In Reno, the RTC bus network connects downtown, Midtown and the airport, but frequencies drop on public holidays and snow can delay routes; a car is genuinely useful outside the centre.

Distances are the real constraint in Nevada. Las Vegas to Reno is about seven hours by road, and flying takes roughly ninety minutes; for a two-centre holiday, fly between them rather than drive. Book the Christmas and New Year week by early autumn, choose a refundable rate for mountain stays, and keep one buffer day either side of 25 December and 1 January 2027 for weather. For most first-time holiday visitors, a Las Vegas base plus a short Reno or Tahoe add-on works best.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Should I fly into Las Vegas or Reno for a Christmas trip?

Fly into Las Vegas for the Strip, Henderson and the desert parks, and into Reno for Tahoe, Sparks and the northern Sierra. Flying between the two takes about ninety minutes and is far easier than the seven-hour winter drive on US-95.

Do I need chains in Nevada over the holidays?

Winter conditions can affect I-80 over Donner Pass and the Lake Tahoe highways from late December onward, and chain controls are common. Carry chains if you are driving to the mountains and check road conditions before each leg. Conditions vary, so treat this as general preparation only.

When should I book a hotel for Christmas and New Year 2026?

Book by early autumn for the 25 December to 1 January 2027 period, especially in Reno, South Lake Tahoe and on the Las Vegas Strip, where holiday demand is highest. Choose refundable rates for mountain stays and allow a buffer day on each side for weather delays.
